“Real History. Real Frights – Our guide, Alison Oborn gave us an experience that I have not encountered on any other tour! This is my Adelaide Gaol Ghost Story.
The tour starts with a walk around the entire gaol. Straight away you get a feeling that you are being watched. The immense grounds and the stillness set the scene for a night of ghostly encounters. For those that love their history they will surely learn a lot from Alison in regards to the Gaol’s dark past. From stories about ex prisoners through to information on Adelaide history – you surely get your moneys worth.
My Adelaide Gaol ghost story began while walking around (and this was before dark) I could hear voices as well as footsteps. I felt like someone was following the group. It was in the museum that I experienced my first paranormal encounter. While Alison and another tour participant were in the Gaol wing I could here footsteps in the museum. Instead of joining them in the wing I instead investigated where the noises were coming from. At the same time Alison and co were trying to close one of the cell door slots. After looking around the museum (I couldn’t see anything) I decided to join the others in the wing. To my amazement as soon as I reached the wing I could see a hand coming from the cell door slot. This hand forcefully smashed the slot down. You can guess what happened next. I ran for my life. I have never been that scared in my life. Well little did I know what laid ahead for the group.
After the tour we made our way back to the old Visiting Justice Room. Here Alison played us examples of EVP and voices from the ghost box. After my experience (I was still shaking like mad) these samples just put me further on edge.
Next was the investigation.
The investigation itself lasts around two hours. Here you are able to use equipment to track the paranormal as well as visit any location in the prison. Alison took us to places around the prison which have had vast paranormal events. Alas those places would not be the ones that would make me doubt my own sanity.
The induction centre looks to be just another building. But by day or night this is indeed is a dark place. As soon as I entered the building I began to feel light headed. It was like it was an extremely hot day. The temperature gauge at that stage read only 22 degrees. That was all about to change. When we sat down on the bench in the induction centre the gauge jumped to over 40 in a little over a few minutes. I then asked if any spirit could lessen the temperature on the gauge. I got a response almost straight away and the gauge dropped by 25 degrees. The group then decided to give the ghost box a go. This is where you ask questions and some times you might get a response. I’m not a great fan and neither is Alison, but I will give anything a go once. During this period the temperature gauge read 68 degrees. All the others in the room were now all complaining about feeling light headed. Alison then asks if anyone present could give us a sign they were there or touch us. Well they did surely show us they were there. It went on for a few minutes. The noise could be best described as footsteps walking through dried leaves. It was the same noise that I had heard all the night. What made this experience worse though was they kept getting closer and closer. Alison tried to radio her husband so that he could bring the video camera but the walkie talkie wouldn’t work. My nerves were shot at this stage. Thank gawd everyone wanted to leave the room.
After regrouping outside we checked all the equipment. Both the temperature gauge and walkie-talkies needed their batteries changed. What is weird about this is both of them had just been refreshed before the investigation. These batteries should have lasted days. Another weird thing is another group members recording device stopped when the noises got closer. There was no one near the device. On the way back we heard the jail bell ring twice (Alison stated that it never had happened before) and also the between yards buzzer went off. Very unusual indeed.
Let me state that all the above did happen and is real. No gimmicks or pranks. We have audio evidence that all this took place. Thank you Alison for an amazing night. For one that has been searching for such an experience for years, I owe you and the Gaols inhabitants big time. This tour is indeed worth it. Give it a go when you are next in Adelaide. You never know what ghostly things you may encounter.”
Old Tailem Town has a rather intriguing building – what appears to be a haunted church! Over time we have had many people trancing out, still awake but remembering nothing. We have had the sighting of a dark shadow figure with many feeling his touch.
On one of our tours, we had a lovely group of people come, but Moses was not truly interested in the stories. He was a sceptic and was just there as part of the group. It wasn’t until he got to that haunted church that things changed. I will let Moses briefly tell what happened and let you watch the video.
Just wanted to thank you for a great night a few weeks ago. I was definitely very surprised by the night’s events. I have to admit I was a sceptic before coming, however, I am glad to say I BELIEVE!!!!
Your tour is 100% REAL – Nothing put on, which makes it so great. However, the church was definitely a deal breaker for me… I can’t believe I was just sitting there in the church, relaxed listening to your stories and then with such a great force my arm was pushed upwards into the pew in front of me. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t feel anything/anyone grab my arm it just went up with such force!??? I can’t explain it… I hit the top of my hand but closer to my wrist. I felt instant pain. My Mother-in-law, Aunty and Uncle were sitting on the pew in front of me and they said that I hit the pew with such force that they jolted forward and my uncle felt my hand go into his ribs.
I have gone over numerous times in my head… trying to rationalise everything and I have come up empty! Even if I punched the pew myself for some unknown reason, I would have hit my knuckles. Whereas my injury was on top of my hand near my wrist. It is just ODD!
By Shane Potter – 27th Oct 2012 – My Halloween Experience
Well, it was a bit of an on again off again effort but I decided last minute to attend the Halloween tour at old Tailem Town run by Alison Oborn and the team at Adelaide Haunted Horizons. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to dress up like the team and other guests due to my wife falling ill and needing to be hospitalised in the preceding week. My costume was 300 km back in Kadina. When I got to old Tailem Town I felt a bit like Brad from the Rocky Horror Picture Show! Dropped into Tailem bend BP service station for some caffeine to get me through the night (the investigation wasn’t finishing till 2 am in the morning!) Only to be greeted by a smiling ghoul that I immediately recognised as Linley my Facebook friend and her husband Simon. I knew it was her despite the makeup! Must have been the cheesy grin!
I followed them back to Old Tailem Town where we were met by Alison as the gatekeeper. Very Egor like! Well, the team resembled the after-effects of the post-Christmas sales with skin hanging off and blood oozing everywhere… I won’t mention the smell!! But that may have just been Simon…he did look a wee bit billious! Anyway, If you want to see gruesome stand around a BBQ while the ghoulish Anna slaps raw steak down on the plate…I couldn’t help wondering if this was an unlucky customer that didn’t quite finish the last tour!!
Not long after watching the sacrificial meat ritual the rest of the tour group rocked up in suitably scary attire. With all the blood around a vampire would have been in heaven (if that’s not an oxymoron…..actually I think I saw an oxymoron too!) I digress..as the sun slowly sank casting suitably eerie shadows across the streets of Old Tailem Town we set off on our tour….that is, after waiting for the girls (who looked scarier than anything ethereal they may have encountered but wouldn’t go to the loo on their own) to catch up! First stop was some old railway carriages and in particular, three windows where a figure has been seen passing along the carriage. A haunting story told by the ever-entertaining Alison and suitably eyes wide teenagers with the usual antics and screams and then it was time for some pics. I got nothing on my camera but one of the kids had trouble with “Static” lines on his and then when one lad stood by the train he got a blue streak through his picture.
We moved onto the House converted into a Pub which was the town owner’s idea of a joke as the previous owner of the house was known to be very anti-drink. This turned out to be the most active location of the night. Perhaps the previous owner was a little peeved off at the joke! Immediately I stood at the bar I heard in my right ear a whisper that sounded pretty much like “Get out!” now I’m fully aware I have a very vivid imagination but it was quite distinct and there was no one on that side of me. Alison had purposely not told anyone of the things that happened in the house so we couldn’t be swayed. I then walked into the front lounge room which was empty at the time and as soon as I stepped through the double door I felt a cold tingling down my back and what felt like a clammy cold hand on the right side of the back of my neck in a stroking sensation. Perhaps a cold breeze? Not sure. When I told Alison she smiled and said this happens often to men who walk into that room. The next interesting thing that happened here was when I tried to take a picture looking down the hall a saw a white figure flit past on the viewfinder just as I pressed the button but nothing came up in the picture. A similar thing was to happen later on the tour.
Moving on Alison told us the tale of the dark shadow figure often seen around the town (She had seen it personally a number of times. Often he was found in the church but seemed free to wander the whole town. They had nicknamed him Ted after a violent swaggy that died in the vicinity. We went on to look at other sites and I must admit I phased out a bit on all the tales which seemed to be keeping the teenagers mesmerised as I was more interested in taking photos in dark places to see if anything popped up. Another interesting experience was at the old “Peake” railway siding that is haunted by a dead ticket master. The whole group was together listening to Alison when noises were heard around the side of the building. Then there was a metallic thump like someone had thrown a rock hard against the side of the little shed next door. No one in our party had moved so it couldn’t have been any of them. I can’t rule out however that one of the other staff wasn’t playing a Halloween trick but they were nowhere nearby at the time. I took an interesting picture here down the side of an old freight carriage with a couple of anomalies that seemed to fit with stories being told.
Moving on I took a couple of photos at the old mechanic shop which showed some less convincing anomalies, one possibility of a shadow person but could also have been just the form of an old plough and other shadows as it was right at the edge of the limit of the flash. Remember I talked about The white figure on my viewfinder screen, well this time I was taking a picture of some old cars and for some reason I got the brief picture on my screen of what looked like Alison or a figure in black walking in front of the cars on a completely different angle to where I was pointing the camera. It wasn’t a reflection because it was really on the screen and almost like a daylight picture. As soon as it was there it was gone again and I blinked and thought it was just a trick of the light or something. We moved on to a couple of little houses with haunting attached but I got no real feelings apart from a couple of cold spots.
After heart rates settled we headed over to the old Wolseley church That is usually a hot spot for activity but tonight it was remarkably quiet. The stories, however, were suitably chilling and the Halloween trimmings including the freaky punk-like dummy of a girl gave a spooky atmosphere. One young fella complained of becoming really cold despite the warmer temperature of the church.
After the church, those of us staying on for the investigation went and had a cuppa while the others listened to some Electronic Voice Phenomena recorded in the church. Now it was time for a bit of hardcore ghost research…the bit I had most been looking forward to. I was keen to see what equipment was used and how it worked.
We started in the Old church but it was particularly quiet and if anything had quite a nice peaceful feel to it. After a half hour or so we decided to move back to the pub. Well immediately I sat in the armchair in the front room I felt light headed and tingly. I believe you should feel the fear and do it anyway so I relaxed into it and the sensation started to subside. (I have this little trick of imagining a white light around myself as protection and love energy…. don’t know if it works but it certainly comforts me!) As we sat in the quiet I heard footsteps come up the passage. All of the team were in the front room. Linley must have heard it too and because she was in a position to see down the passage she asked if we could swap places. It was the same passage I tried to photograph and saw the white form on my viewfinder. For a brief moment as I sat in Linley’s chair the KT (?) meter I was holding (designed to pick up electromagnetic energy and light up) spiked with a bright green light. It must have picked up on something! It went quiet for a while and then we decided to wander through to the back bathroom where supposedly a guy had suicided in the bath. We asked questions and the light meter seemed to respond with random flashes. We seem to pick up on something. On returning to the front lounge where the “Ghost Box” had been set up (The ghost box is a kind of transistor radio that cycles through stations like a constantly moving scanner to pick up spirit responses to questions) We all introduced ourselves to any possible spirit hanging around and got the response that sounded like “F….Off” Anna told us that they always get abusive language in this house and that the spirit it quite arrogant and rude. Remembering this is the house/pub that I was told to “Get Out”. Questions were asked and seemingly responses were heard …often sounding abusive. And some names were given including my own. This continued until it was time to pack up and Alison and will join us after packing up all the Halloween props.
It was a great night and a nice distraction for me after what had been a difficult week. It was great to finally meet Alison, Linley, Simon, Will and Anna after seeing their work on the net for so long. They are a great bunch and nice genuine people who take a realistic approach to their investigations. Question everything and look hard for alternative answers because most “events” can be debunked….but there are just enough of the “undebunkable” ones to keep them researching which is great for all of us with an interest in understanding the paranormal!
BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE NIGHT – PART 1 – 10th Dec 2011
By Mike Metcalfe
We like to encourage our guests to write their own experiences up rather then us do it for them. That way you get to see it from their perspective. We will be adding a couple more from this Blood Moon Eclipse night as it certainly was one night that stuck out in our minds!
“One of the best tours I have been on and where I have witnessed the most paranormal activity would definitely have to be the night of THE BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE on the 10th of December 2011. I’ve been on many tours at Old Tailem Town and have experienced a few odd occurrences and have even captured a very intriguing photo which I will post for you all to see, but this night of the eclipse certainly takes the cake.
From the minute we started the tour at the Bent Elbow Hotel, about 4 cameras failed to take pictures. My camera, for instance, would take a photo and the flash would go off and yet a totally black image is all I had. I think I took about 20 photos of all black images before I gave up. Yes, this was strange.
Our second port of call then occurred at the Music Emporium whilst Alison was telling everyone about Jack. Only this time every camera on the tour failed to operate, all but one and that was Alison’s. It was strange that 4 cameras failed at the Bent Elbow, now suddenly every camera was failing. The one camera that did work would take a photo of an object in which the angle was obscured. One must wonder what the hell is going on!
Was all of this the work of our dark friend who haunts the village? Turns out that all of this was nothing compared to what was about to happen.
Some of the ladies had claimed to have seen a man in a hat at the Peak Railway Station; I didn’t see anything and can only go by what they had said. One lady claims that it was her uncle, but I would put money on the fact it was probably our dark friend who we have affectionately named Ted. He likes to play with the guests on the tour and not always in a nice way.
The tour ended as always at the Wolseley Church which is where Daniel Rob and Anna were doing some private work away from the tour. We had approached the church only to find Daniel running out almost in fear and bewilderment. Daniel was a bit vague on detail but Anna and Rob claim that Daniel didn’t seem like himself and was staring at them with disgust, they tried to call his name and see if he was alright and that is when he came too and ran outside. Daniel does not recall what happened???
Some of the tour guests had gone home and those who were brave enough stuck around for the Investigation. Everyone seemed to be in very good spirits and was thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was decided that we would all sit in silence and absorb the natural sounds of the church and its surroundings. After a while, a lady named Flick stated that she could hear what sounded like the voice of a male crying out for help emanating from the back room of the church. Moments later Will stated that he heard a female’s voice calling out for help coming from the back room. Shortly after this, a noise was heard from the back room of the church in which Alison decided to go and investigate. Whilst in the back room and yet still in sight of us, all of the K2 EMF meters went off the scale in multiple intervals. This naturally sparked everyone’s attention and a buzz of excitement was felt across the church.
Meanwhile, Daniel had gone into the back room with Alison to investigate the noise that we had heard, the noise that had initially thought to have been a rodent had led them to a book. Funnily enough, this book was titled “Daniel and the revelations”. After a chuckle had been had, Daniel picked up the book and the first page he had turned to, his eyes had been drawn to the line “WHEN THE MOON BECAME AS BLOOD”. Just so happens that at this very moment the blood moon eclipse was taking place.
Once Alison and Daniel had shared their information with the rest of the group, somebody else turned to a page where a paragraph read “He will give proof of his full power”. What a bizarre coincidence this to have been, or was it our dark friend in spirit who was trying to tell us something about himself to us??? I guess what makes all this interesting is what a medium had told Alison on a previous tour and that was that there is a dark figure within the village who likes to play with the tour groups and that he was a sinister man in life as well as in death. This dark entity believes that he is so much better than us and that we are weak and pathetic and so on and so on. I will let Alison elaborate on this more if she likes.
Shortly after and whilst we had recovered from the bizarreness of this coincidental find, we sat in quiet once again. Flick who was sitting in the front row with her mother claimed that her lap had become freezing. I believe Anna had stepped up to the front to investigate this claim. While discussing the cold feeling, Flick’s mum began to shake and whimper almost uncontrollably. This was visible even to me who was sitting 5 rows back in the complete darkness. Flick mentioned that perhaps she is having an anxiety attack and it was decided by all that she needs to be taken outside for fresh air. Anna had grabbed hold of one arm to assist her down the aisle; I had a torch to the floor so they could see where they were walking. When they had approached the aisle where I was sitting, it looked like Flick’s mum was going to fall the ground and therefore rob who was sitting in front of me decided to get up and assist.
By this time the girls were nearing the door and when Rob grabbed hold of her other arm to assist, an almighty roar was set forth
“GET THE F*CK AWAY”…… What a shock this had been to all of us. Was this (Ted) our dark friend’s way of showing us his true power? By now Flick, her mother, Anna and Alison had made it outside. Rob had come back and sat in the row in front of me and was now furious. The look on his face and the anger he was expressing was a bit of a shock. He was so angry towards Flick’s mum so much so that he wanted to hit her. These emotions were coming from one of the mildest in manner and passive guys you can meet. I couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps the energy from Flick’s mum had transferred to Rob as he was absolutely fine beforehand???
Flick had then come back into the church to inform us that her mum is now fine and doesn’t remember a thing about what had happened and in fact, all she remembers feeling is an almighty rage that had built up inside her and what she couldn’t control. She wanted very much to apologise to Rob but refused to come back into the church. Rob again showed his anger and basically told Flick that he doesn’t care and they can F off. What is interesting about all this is the fact that many people before tonight have also had a shift in mood to a somewhat depressive and angry episode and then soon as they leave the church, they become fine.
Flick and her mum decided that they now wanted to leave, so Alison came in to get her keys ready to drive them back to the car park. As Alison exited the church, all of the K2 meters went berserk again in fluctuating spikes. What the hell was going to happen next I thought to myself sitting quietly in retrospect?
It was now when the atmosphere in the church lifted to a more jovial tune, Rob’s mood was on the up and we were all having a laugh. About twenty minutes later Alison returned and low and behold the K2 meters went off the scale again in fluctuating spikes. My first thoughts were “hmmm, I think our dark friend had gone with Alison to farewell flick and her mum and has now returned back with Alison”.
It was now very late into the night and Alison had a major headache, perhaps this was a sign to end the night and go home. Perhaps the headache was our dark friend’s way of saying it’s over now and that he’s shown his true mite, now bugger off.
And there you have it, the night of the BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE.
Thanks, Ted 0_o”
BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE NIGHT – PART 2
By Robert Verrall
Before the main event of the blood moon eclipse night two of our regular guests, Daniel and Robert had gone straight to the church to investigate with Anna while Alison took the tour. Eventually, Alison arrived with the tour at the cemetery where she was about to tell the stories… As she began, there was a scream from within the church followed by the sound of running and Daniel exploded out of the Church to join us. This is their story.
“Earlier in the evening of the Blood Moon Eclipse, events started well before the eclipse. That time in the church with Daniel and Anna was quite strange. During that time I felt really protective toward Anna, thinking if Daniel was going to lose it, I was closer to him anyway. I wrote all that down afterwards, too, so this is from that…
We were asking questions of the Ghost Box and my name kept coming up. I was asking questions like “what do you want with me” and stuff like this. The freaky thing happened when I asked: “What do you want me to do? You’re mentioning my name so what do you want me to do?”
“Leave,” came the reply. Then underneath Anna’s response to that, I heard “go”. Words like that came up a couple of times when I was asking specific questions about what I should do and why it was interested in me.
In fact, we really never got an answer to that. With the Ghost Box stuff, all it wanted me to do was leave.
Oh, there were other things while I was asking the questions… I could hear anti-gay stuff and it was those words I don’t like (the F-word). I don’t know if Anna heard them and chose to say nothing or what. It seems Daniel didn’t hear it. But it was really abusive with the swearing and stuff. It was saying fuckwits and the C-word as well. So seriously abusive stuff.
Anna started to feel unwell, too. She felt as though she was going to faint. When we got back for tea, she still wasn’t right and I could see it in her eyes she wasn’t right. I pointed that out, too, and she said she felt it most around the eyes. Now that was interesting.
Then when we were asking questions, Daniel got up and started to go towards the table. He stood there and stared at us. According to Anna, Daniel initially looked in the direction of the pulpit area. He then looked at us with the most malevolent look on his face. Anna kept trying to get his attention: “Daniel… Daniel are you all right?”
When I looked at the face I’d seen that look before of him when he’s really shitty with something. It’s this kind of thin-lipped pissed off look. Hard to describe, I know, but that’s the best way I can describe it. I guess disdainful of us is probably the best way to put it.
At the same time, I knew I had to remain calm about it. I also knew if he did go stupid I was between him and Anna so I would have protected her anyway. In fact, I felt really protective of Anna at that point.
Then on the Ghost Box, I heard “torch” and instinctively I shone the torch right in Daniel’s face. That seemed to snap him out of it, thankfully. “Wha… what happened?” and all this stuff. “How did I get over here?”
Anna, still really quite worried, asked him some questions along the lines of “don’t you know what happened”. She went through the whole thing with him and he had no recollection of what he had done. He said afterwards he felt he was a bit dirty, actually, like he needed a shower.
He really did blank out but the one overriding thing he said he felt was anger. Essentially he felt like we were a couple of idiots. Ironically, we were discussing this thing prior to that, I think, though my timeline on that could be a bit askew.
I think we did go outside to discuss it, I can’t remember. Anna said out there she couldn’t believe I was “so cool about it”. I guess because I really didn’t quite know what was going on. And, again, I felt I had to be cool about it for her benefit – at the same time, I’m not really an “Oh my God” reactionary type. You know something is up in a major way if I’m doing that.
Anna was genuinely concerned Daniel was going to punch her or something. She kept asking him questions he couldn’t answer. He couldn’t remember anything about it at all. The thing is he didn’t get annoyed at her over that, he was concerned himself he couldn’t remember.
The interesting thing was when the Ghost Box was going through the stations, it stopped on this awful low guttural voice Anna and I really didn’t like. It sounded really demonic. It seemed to be at that point Anna started to feel unwell and Daniel started to zone out.
We all went back into the church and I started to get that hate feeling myself. A few of us had to leave because we weren’t feeling too great.
I’m glad I wrote all that stuff down as I don’t remember a lot of it – especially when I was affected. At the same time, I still feel really awful and embarrassed at not accepting that apology. That really is out of character for me!”
The Blood Moon Eclipse will be a night I will remember for the rest of my life.”
My Creepy Ghost Experience at Old Tailem Town by Deanna Turner-Reid
During our visit to Tailem Town on Saturday night (hosted by the fabulous team from Adelaide’s Haunted Horizons) my partner and I split from the main group and went with Anna to start investigating the Church. Not too long after we started my partner Adam had the sensation that his airways were being cut off. He started coughing and his voice went scratchy. The feeling soon subsided and we continued on our investigation. A little time later Anna and I both saw a dark solid figure in the backroom of the church.
A little time later I saw at the back of the church a tall dark figure but only the waist up. Definitely a male build and in the same area as a dark figure was seen on Easter weekend. I looked directly at ‘him’ and when i turned my torch on… he was gone.
Sometime later when Alison went looking for her car keys, I joined her on a walk around the town to try and find them. We heard footsteps several times, voices, and even a whistle as if calling a dog. I also had the feeling that there was someone walking towards us and as if I had to move out of the way or I’d walk into them.
Then sometime later again when we were all in the church. We were talking about the dark figure in the back of the church and whether it was an angry spirit or not when I started getting extremely hot, and started feeling very angry toward…s everyone and a feeling of disdain towards them. When my partner asked me if I heard the noise behind us and everyone was talking about it I had the strong feeling that I wanted to tell them all that they were a ‘bunch of ****ing idiots” which is certainly not in my nature or something that I would normally feel in that sort of situation. It took leaving the church for the feeling to go away.
